Joe learned how to sail in 1976 at Lake Merritt in Oakland, California on El Toro sailboats. He sailed on the Bay with friends and family and joined a sailing club in the Oakland Estuary. He then joined Club Nautique. While he was a member of Club Nautique he and his wife did bareboat charters in Greece, Tahiti, Mexico and the East Coast.

In 1998 he and his wife bought a 47 foot sailboat and in 2001 they started their cruising life. They sailed to Mexico and Central America on the Pacific side. They then went through the Panama Canal and cruised in the Western Caribbean. After that they sailed to the East Coast of the U.S. ending their seven year cruising travels in the Chesapeake Bay.

Joe has been an instructor at Club Nautique since September, 2008. He teaches, Basic Keelboat, Basic Cruising, Bareboat Cruising and Night Sailing. Joe says that one of the things that he really enjoys about sailing is that there is always something to learn.
