One of the great things about sailing and boating in the Bay Area is that we have a very diverse shore bird population. While teaching the last offshore power class we saw a couple of birds that none of us had seen before. One of the students had a bird identification app but it was not able to identify these birds.
I looked at the various bird apps and found “Merlin Bird Id” by Cornell University. It is rated with 5 stars and seems like an excellent app. It determines your current location and present birds in that location. It also has the calls for each bird and shows several pictures of the bird at different ages and positions.
